It’s Been A Week – What Is The Emergency?

16 Jul

Quartzsite Town Council met last Sunday morning, in a secret meeting behind locked doors. According to the minutes of that meeting, it was determined that there is an “imminent risk to public safety”.

Since that time, there seems to have been no effort to communicate to the public. It seems appropriate that the citizens be told details about an “imminent risk” to their safety. No notice of such a safety risk has been posted on bulletin boards, nor even announced at the following Tuesday Council Meeting.

The public cannot learn the nature of the risk from the minutes of the Sunday meeting.

The public has not been informed what the risk is by any means of broadcast.

The public has not been informed what exactly is being done about it.

The public has not been informed what they can do to avoid danger, if it exists.

The Council did take the time to declare that the risk will be exist until they declare otherwise.

The Council did take the time to declare that there will be no call to the public at meetings.

The Council did take the time to declare that the chief of police should be given more powers. That would beJeff Gilbert, the same chief of police that the Town Council refuses to place on paid administrative leave while outside agencies investigate him. The law is not being met by Council.

Sgt. Ponce Interview This Monday National TV

16 Jul

Sergeant Will Ponce, of the Quartzsite Police Department, has been invited by Fox Business News to appear on their show “Freedom Watch”. That interview is scheduled for between 5 and 6pm, Quartzsite (Mountain) time. Sgt. Ponce is among “The Quartzsite 10” who signed a complaint against Police Chief Gilbert. They also expressed “no confidence” in their chief.

Although Chief Gilbert is now under investigation by outside agencies, he remains on the job. This appears to contradict standard procedure. The Quartzsite Town Council must take action to place the chief of police on paid administative leave, but they have refused to do so.

Hi Chief Gilbert

Martin Brannan has now been reprimanded for a serious rule violation. I cannot share the contentment you must feel, now that Brannan has been permanently put in place as the Town Attorney, Prosecutor, and Parliamentarian.

That decision is made and his appointment already has been proven one that will have lasting impact on Quartzsite in the future.

I have reflected now for some time on why you would be so energetic in promoting Martin Brannan for the prosecutor job. You even sought me out at the trail dedication, for private discussion, on April 28, to express your fervent desire that the Council choose Brannan.

It was one of those “special” Council meetings that are usually scarcely noticed by most people in town.

At that public meeting in the afternoon, you commented publicly in his support again, from the podium. That was three plugs in one day.

The prosecutor job would seem to be a political appointment. Do you feel that your direct involvement in promoting Brannan’s political appointment was appropriate?

 Chief Gilbert

I am, of course, disappointed in your response. Old friendships are not a basis for qualifications in hiring.

Of all the attorneys inArizona, why would the people of Quartzsite select one who is twice accused of poor performance – at the least?

Why would we select any prosecutor with so little previous public notice or discussion?

It speaks well of Mr. Brannan to keep you informed. Who do you mean to refer to as “us”?

Doug,

Thank you for the information. I have known Mr. Brannan professionally my many years now, and I’m confident he will exceed our expectations. In addition, Mr. Brannan has kept us informed of his situation.

Thank you for your concerns,

Chief Gilbert
